Blessed Michael McGivney: Our Founder & Legacy
đź“– Who Was Blessed Michael McGivney?
Father Michael J. McGivney (1852–1890) was a young, devoted parish priest serving at St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Connecticut, during a time when Catholic immigrant families faced severe economic hardship and social hostility.
- A Shepherd to the Vulnerable: Working in a tough industrial city, Father McGivney witnessed firsthand the devastation that occurred when a family’s breadwinner died, often leaving widows and orphans destitute.
- A Visionary Leader: At just 29 years old, he brought a group of local parish men together in the basement of St. Mary’s to form a fraternal brotherhood—founding the Knights of Columbus in 1882.
- Beatification: On October 31, 2020, Father McGivney was officially beatified by the Catholic Church, recognizing his exemplary life of charity, parish ministry, and devotion to protecting families.
🛡️ The Founding Mission
Father McGivney established the Knights of Columbus based on four core principles that remain our guiding light today:
- Charity: To reach out with love to those in need, offering food, warm clothing, shelter, and support to the vulnerable.
- Unity: Standing together as Catholic men to support our parishes, local communities, and one another in faith and action.
- Fraternity: Building strong, faithful brotherhoods where members look out for one another and care for the families of fallen brothers.
- Patriotism: Serving our country and local communities with honor, integrity, and civic devotion.
“If you desire to protect your family and serve your church and community, there is a place for you with the Knights.”
🕊️ The Good Provided: His Living Legacy
What started in a single parish basement with a handful of men has grown into a global force for good with over 2 million members worldwide.
- Financial Protection for Families: Through the Knights’ top-rated fraternal insurance program, Father McGivney’s dream of keeping families financially secure during times of tragedy continues every day.
- Community Outreach & Charity: From local parish grill-outs, food drives, and coats for kids programs to disaster relief across the globe, Knights put faith in action through hands-on service.
- Support for Vocations & Parishes: The Order works hand-in-hand with priests, bishops, and parish communities to build up the Church and foster seminarian growth.
- Strengthening Catholic Families: Providing spiritual growth resources, family programs, and strong fraternal support to help men lead faithful lives.
